Embracing the Village: Caring for a Loved One Who's Resistant to Care

Updated: Jan 16

Somedays we win and somedays we lose. Caring for a loved one who's resistant to necessary care and engages in combative behavior can be emotionally draining for caregivers. In such challenging situations, the importance of a supportive community, a 'village', becomes invaluable.

The Struggle of Resistance to Care:

When a person we're caring for resists engaging in behaviors crucial for their well-being, such as hygiene and taking their medicine, it creates tension and frustration. This resistance not only impacts their health but strains the relationship between caregivers and the person receiving care.

Many of us are caring for a parent and the sudden change in power dynamic can create difficulty for the caregiver.

The Emotional Toll on Caregivers:

For caregivers, the feeling of helplessness can be overwhelming. It's disheartening when our efforts to provide necessary care are met with resistance or aggression. It may even evoke a sense of failure, despite our best intentions.

The Power of a Supportive Community:

Amidst these challenges, the support of a loving community is a beacon of hope. Whether it's family members, friends, or dedicated caregivers, their collective effort forms the backbone of care. Our family, extended family, and the caregiver have become pillars of support in ensuring Mom's well-being.

Coming together as a village provides a support when things cannot be handled by one caregiver alone. Each member plays a unique role, contributing to Mom's care in their own way. Their unwavering support not only aids in her physical well-being but also helps us caregivers not to feel so alone.

Gratitude for the Village:

Expressing gratitude for this support network is crucial. Acknowledging the efforts of everyone involved not only fosters a sense of unity but also reinforces the importance of collective care.

Caring for a loved one resistant to care requires patience, understanding, and a united front from your "village" if you have one. If not, hopefully you are able to build one. It's the coming together of this 'village' that not only ensures the well-being of the person receiving care but also provides strength and resilience to the caregivers facing these challenging moments.

Remember, it's in this collective effort that the true essence of caregiving shines through, making a profound impact on Mom's life and fostering a supportive environment for everyone involved in her care.
