Navigating the Dementia Journey: A Caregiver's Guide to Free Resources

As caregivers, our journey is a constant learning process. Every day presents new challenges, but with the right resources and support, we can navigate the complexities of caring for our loved ones with dementia. In this post, I want to share some invaluable free resources that have been instrumental in my caregiving journey.

One of the first things I learned is the importance of educating myself about our situation and understanding the intricacies of dementia. The internet is a treasure trove of free resources, ranging from articles and blogs to videos and webinars. Organizations like the Alzheimer's Association offer a wealth of information and support, including free seminars and coaching sessions. For those with Kaiser Permanente as their medical provider, there are additional resources available for medical-related support.

One particular resource that has been immensely helpful is the Careblazers YouTube channel with Natali Edmonds, a board-certified Geropsychologist. Their informative videos and courses provide practical tips and insights into various aspects of caregiving. I enrolled in one of their courses about a year ago, and it has been incredibly beneficial in helping me adapt my approach to different caregiving tasks.

Adapting to the changing needs of our loved ones is crucial, especially when it comes to everyday activities like bathing and feeding. Investing in spill-pro

of dishes and adult sippy cups has made meal times less stressful, and I'm considering purchasing adaptive silverware for added convenience.

But caregiving isn't just about practical solutions—it's also about finding moments of joy and connection amidst the challenges. One tip I discovered is playing music during diaper changes and dressing routines. Not only does it distract and soothe my loved one, but it also brings us closer together through shared moments of laughter and comfort.

As my mom's dementia progresses, communication becomes more challenging, but our bond remains strong. We may struggle to find the right words, but our connection transcends language, grounded in love and understanding.

In conclusion, the journey of caregiving is complex and ever-evolving, but with the abundance of free resources available, we can equip ourselves with the knowledge and support needed to navigate this path with compassion and resilience. Let's continue to learn, adapt, and cherish the moments we share with our loved ones, making each day as meaningful and fulfilling as possible.
